The Designer

Jamila Morgan was born and raised in the gorgeous historic city of Savannah, GA. Having a father who is over 6ft tall she had hopes to grow to be as tall as he and to one day become a famous supermodel. In the 8th grade however, Jamila barely reached 5ft. At that point she knew she had to make a change in her future career plans. Her love for fashion drove her to decide to become a designer. Jamila went on to attend Georgia Southern University where she joined various fashion groups and perfected her sewing skills. In May of 2011 Jamila graduated with a B.S. Fashion Merchandising and Apparel Design.

The Button

Shortly after Jamila graduated she began sewing and selling clutch styled handbags from the kitchen and living room of her parents home. With a fairly steady customer base Jamila's grandmother suggested that she include something in each bag to let the buyers know that they were purchasing an authentic piece; "something like a button." At first all of the buttons were random colors, but after the revamp of the brand in 2014 Jamila decided on one color; periwinkle. When Jamila was 12 years old she helped her grandmother take care of her great-grandmother who was battling esophageal cancer, among other things. Periwinkle is the color of the esophageal cancer ribbon and each button is in memory of her.

The Process

Each style of bag takes several months to complete. Every step of the process is critiqued down to the smallest detail. The design is tweaked to perfection, the best quality of materials are sourced, and the top seamstresses tediously sew each piece together. VERTIZONTAL is about forever. We give our wearers timeless pieces that can be worn for decades and later passed down for generations to come.
